In the time we have and with what are given in that time, it is for us to exist with ultimate existential significance, meaning and purpose.

What could be more important to a Christian than scripture? The reality and accessibility of the existing Christ is more important. The former merely tells of the latter... as best it can. It is not that God created or caused us- rather that God indwelling through Christ is creating or causing us. For many reasons and on many levels, preferring word representations of reality as experienced by others, to ones immediate and direct experience is to prefer imaginary abstractions to life itself.

Consider that you and a companion are walking in a hilly wood on a sunny fall day, with leaves all about in resplendent colours. Your companion writes down notes of what you both seem to be experiencing. That evening you use your companions notes as a guide for deeper understanding and knowing about your personal experience of your personal walk.

You let go your personal experiences because your companions notes are easier to come to terms with. In time your grandchildren find your companions notes and your comments about those and tries to use these to sensibly and intelligibly encounter and engage God.

What poor reflections and vague shadows your grandchild uses in pursuit of salvation and holiness. All the while the immediate and direct experience of the walk in the wood with resplendent leaves is available to your grandchild... who has in effect lost his or her way with God all about and within his or her person.

When we read scripture, we put our bodies between God and our personal self. But when we are spiritually forming in God of and from God indwelling according to Christ after the spirit, nothing separates us from God. Our communion is in the union intelligible to us through the specifics that are Christ. The coming century promises that the grounding and framing of Christian living will move and shift.

The challenges will cause faith to stumble, if not fall. In the reality of Christ there is a Covenant --- a Christ Covenant --- that will ground and frame or form spiritual living. Existential Christology as approached in this book provides a practical framework for Christianity in the 21st century withstanding the scrutiny of critical reflection and thought. More importantly existential Christology establishes the ground on which Christian practice frees people from bondage and captivity.
