Still more significantly, the last pretences of the traditional moral consensus within modern, socially fragmented societies have been eroded -- including the belief that sexuality is something to be hidden behind taboos. This book argues for a radical revaluation of our attitudes to media representations of porn, in the context of an interdisciplinary examination of competing attitudes to sexual diversity itself.

The author examines critically both the philosophical bases for the principal ideological stances and social-scientific theories and data relating exposure to pornography to putatively harmful consequences. The authors provocative conclusion is that a liberal society can dare to face sexual freedom of information, and diversity of sexual choice, providing that we adopt radical policies for the sexual socialization of young people.

This has to be embedded within both media and moral education programmed, such that from puberty children learn to understand porn for what it is -- one source of masturbatory fantasies, and in no sense a script for courtship, loving relations, and sexual conduct itself. Only then can we hope to succeed with the vital goal of learning to combine a duty of social care, responsibility, and self-control, with the right to sexual freedom and diversity.
